Here's the deal.

I have way too much stuff going on in my real life. Blogging takes a lot of time out of my day and I can't concentrate as much as I should on things that matter right now. Namely, things like grades and college.

Therefore, I will be taking a break from blogging. I'm going to have to take off at least a month and it could very easily be 3+ months. This is not the end at all. I'm committed to being back up at 100% right after the new year.

There is one exception - the Friday Flickr Fetch will NOT stop. I've pre-selected all future Fetches leading up to February so there's no hours and hours searching for that perfect hot pic.

I can't wait to come back and rock it out.

Today, October 3, 2006, at 4:55PM, Gayer Mechanic Wales had its 100,000th visitor. They were the everyday GMW visitor - they got here by way of a link on one of my favorite blogs - Aussielicious - and they live outside America - in Italy - just like an increasing percentage of visitors here.

I started this blog less than 8 months ago on a dark, cold, and lonely Wednesday in February. I started the blog for myself, as a personal collection of things that interested me, and I got about 5 hits a day - all from hitting reload/refresh . There wasn't any real need for anonymity - no one was watching. Well today, things are a little different.

Yes, in the future, I want to be out. There are so many things I wish I could share and I think those things would make this blog better. Someday when I come out in real life to my friends and family, I'll jump on the computer and do the same for all the readers in cyberspace.

Until then, look forward to some changes around here - mainly a major facelift that is gonna be gorgeous!

Last night I went to a friend's birthday party. I've mentioned her and her parents before. She lives way outside the city that I live in - almost half an hour. When I got to her house, walked around to the back porch, and looked around, I realized that I knew NONE of the other people there. Not to desperage the other people there, but they were all pretty rural and the center of their social lives is the McDonalds right off the interstate. So generally not the crowd of people that I hang out with.

But it WAS fun.

We had a bonfire and made smores, something that I haven't done in years. I snapped a picture on my pebl. I gave my friend the new Scissor Sisters album, Ta Dah. I went to the record store before the party and picked the album up. As I was leaving I realized that I wanted one too so I went back and got another for myself. Crazy crazy. Since then, I've listened to the album 4 times through, which is insane, but so satisfying. I almost never buy physical albums anymore, mostly I download from iTunes. But for both this album and Confessions, I go for the real deal.

The gayness continues...with some Scientology!

Christian is continuing to live in denial, with regards to his gayness - I hate saying homosexuality, so very 1990s. Richard Chamberlain comes in with his pet, Thad Luckinbill (great name) and tells Christian all the procedures that Thad will need, including a new "aristocratic nose" - what the hell? So blah blah blah, Christian convinces Thad that he doesn't need to pretend to be gay/bi for his sugar daddy, takes him to a strip club, and watches him get danced on(?) by a stripper. Oh yes, Thad remarks to the stripper (the episode, Blue Mondae, is named after her) that he has a "woody." Fabulous!

So I think it's safe to say that by convincing Thad that he is straight, Christian believes that he too can be convinced that he is straight. So, that storyline ends with Richard kicking Thad out because of the strip club thing. Thad goes to Christian's place, blah blah blah, offers blowjob for money, gets punched and kicked out by Christian. [I failed to mention the butt shots! Sorry! Anyone know where there might be pics posted?]

Oh ya, all that Scientology stuff with Matt and Kimber, crazy crazy shit. Those producers have some real balls.

Damn, just finished watching. Fairly good episode. I'll cover the gay parts. After the rumors going around all summer AND the very first scene in which Sean asks Christian to assist him with "Get over here, I'm lonely", it becomes clear that there WILL be gay themes throughout the season. Brooke Shields, playing Christian's psychiatrist, asks him "Ever consider the possibility that you're in love with your partner?" Ha, duh. And he ends up doing her on the desk. So that combined with some comments by a mother-daughter whore tag team prompts Christian to have an interior designer over to see his place - he asks her to "Butch it up." Also, there are some nice moments of interaction between Sean and Christian while Sean is handling some ball implants. Classic, I salute you.

Power Of The Blog: iTunes Changes "Back to School" Playlists

Just 4 days ago, I posted this, about an iTunes Music Store set of "Back to School" playlists. I noted a couple different playlist descriptions, all of which were based on different social cliques or groups at a typical school. Well, it looks like they've had a subtle makeover since then - and what a surprise - they took out all the things that I mentioned.

HIGHLIGHTS:

Shakira and Wyclef Jean performance. This was so great! The dancing was crazy. Plus, I don't know how many times there was a close up shot of Shakira's ass shaking. The vocals weren't as strong as they could have been, but it was fun.

Lil' Kim entrance: I couldn't believe it when Kim walked onstage with those guards and in that orange jumpsuit. She is crazy and is totally owning it.

Jessica Simpson word mangle: Jessica totally fucked up the Best Dance Video presentation with her "muah...ma..la..ya ". And she said "push my tush" - not funny.

OK Go treadmill dance: I couldn't believe that they did that dance live. The video for that song is amazing and you know it took them a couple dozen times to get it right.

Pink/Nicole Ritchie Awkwardness: When Pink was presented the Best Pop Video award by Nick Lachey and Nicole Ritchie, I thought there might be some tension. Pink won for her "Stupid Girls" video which is all about people like Nicole, Paris, Lindsay, and Jessica. But there was no tension, or slapping, so I was disappointed.

For anyone with iTunes (that's about everyone) check out the Music Store ASAP if you can. iTunes always puts together playlists for certain time periods, big artists, moods, etc, but today I noticed a group of playlists called "Back to School". Each playlist is supposed to represent different college stereotypes. I literally burst out laughing when I read some of these.

"Certain symbols or page numbers from sacred texts"? And they have a picture of a cross right above the description? Half-drunk Latvian girl? Who writes this stuff? Apple is so hip.

Miami wasn't working for me. Jack Black hosts it this time with some hot performers like The Killers, Justin Timberlake, and Christina Aguilera. Madonna better show up! I'm already planning ahead to have my homework finished in time by 8pm on Thursday when they start. You know the opening number is gonna blow everyone away. MTV has a cool site up for the awards. And so it begins.

College, yeah, it's time to talk about college. I've only mentioned it here a couple times, but in my real life, the subject is becoming unavoidable. Everyone I run into asks me something along the lines of "What schools are you looking at?" or "What are you thinking of studying?" or worse "Where are you applying?". Next month I'm going to look at some schools in Ohio. Not my idea - my parent's. I know nothing about schools in Ohio, except that some of them are "hot". The only school that I've fallen in love with is Wesleyan in Middletown, CT. Something amazing happened to me when I visited there: I could actually see myself there, taking great classes, learning a lot, and having great friends. One reason why I'm so interested in the school is because of its gay factor. I KNOW that I'll be out by the end of my senior year, and I want to be totally out in college. Quite honestly, I feel like I need an environment with a lot of fellow gays. During high school, I've never even had an out gay friend my own age, and I think that I've missed out on a lot because of that.

In the next month or so I'll be narrowing things down. Even though it's a little late in the game, my parents are hiring a college coach to help me deal with it all. Well, more than helping me - I'm the first kid in my family to head off to college and even though my parents did their college stuff when they were my age, they know less than I do.

Now for something entirely different...

A good friend of mine from school transferred away last year. She's one of my favorite people in the entire world and we lost touch last year and over the summer. Her parents are Swiss and she has dual citizenship - lucky. A while ago my parents met her parents and they hit it off. So this past Saturday, my parents and I went over to their house for dinner. My friend and I totally caught up on each other's lives and had a great dinner, and afterwards, while the parents got drunk, we watched The Libertine. I hated it. I never have a problem handling violence or grossness or sex or nasty diseases, but the movie definitely pushed my taste level. It was also just a weird movie. It was REALLY well acted, I mean, it's Johnny Depp and Samantha Morton and John Malkovich and Rosamund Pike. Super cast. But the writing went nowhere and the direction was horrendous. So thumbs down. Ouch.

Oh another thing about that night: another couple was at the dinner and as I was helping to serve dessert the guy flung his arm out and made me spill ice cream and chocolate syrup all over my shirt. My brand new shirt. I got most of it off and it was fine. It was hard to be mad at him. He was pretty young and fairly cute.

And...

Yesterday a bunch of my friends and I had a tea party. Yes, a tea party. It was beyond, beyond very gay - it was very British. We made little round sandwiches with cucumbers, cheese, olives, lox, shrimp, tomatoes, and herbs. They were awesome. For little desserts, we made this French cake thing which tasted amazing and jam puffs which would have turned out better if we had had enough yeast. I LOVE tea and I had 2 cups - one of my all time favorite, Lady Grey, and one of this great plum spice that I've never tried. We had the party at the house of one of my best friends who's leaving for college in just a couple days. If I ever came out "officially" to my friends, it would be to her first.

The group that was at the tea party is part of this unofficial "cooking party" club that we started. Every now and then on a weekend, we go to one of our houses and cook. And we cook good stuff. We regularly pull off 6 course meals that take 3 hours to make and it's always fun. I can't wait until I come out to them and reveal my secret identity (my real name isn't Ace in case you haven't figured it out) to you guys. I have so many pictures from the cooking parties and it's gonna be a blast to introduce you to all my friends, because they fucking rock.

Soon, I'll be starting my senior year in high school. As I'm getting closer and closer to going back, I'm trying sort out my feelings. On one hand, I'm really looking forward to seeing all my friends, having fun in class, doing homework together, talking about how crazy Tom Cruise is, and all the other things that don't happen during summer. On the other hand, I've realized that this is my last chance to come out to a lot of people. I hate the thought of knowing all these people, graduating, then all of us separating and going to college, and to have them not know "officially" that I'm gay.

I know some people would say that it's my business and that the majority of the people already suspect. I would agree, it is my business. But I want to tell them on my terms. People having a suspicion isn't enough for me. Whether I like it or not, I feel like I have to justify to people why I didn't have girlfriends or why I didn't go to parties or why I dressed the way I did or talked about the things that I talked about or never expressed ANY interest in sports.

Emotionally, I'm not sure how hard it's gonna be, I still haven't dealt with the parents, but I have a feeling that the actual, technical, physical act of coming out at my school would be easy. My school LIVES on gossip, so I could tell one person, and I kid you not, everyone would know by the end of the day - not an exaggeration. Also, since I'm sure everyone suspects, they wouldn't need convincing.

Okay, now I'll try to end on a happier note. The other day I had senior pictures, which until I got my little postcard, I didn't know happened in the summer. So the other day I go to school - very weird to be there after months of not being there - and I go to the gym area where they're taking them. Someone tell me if I shouldn't be surprised, but I couldn't believe what a production it was. You can take up to 5 different photos:

School ID picture - just normal sit down, in front of gray background
Casual - in front of fake lockers, fake brickwork, and fake archways
Closeup - leaning over velvet board
Formal - white bib fake shirt thing + bowtie + shabby jacket = tux
Environmental - standing next to trees, looking over a wooden bridge

I am so not into preserving and remembering my school experience. I never got a class ring, even after my entire grade got pulled out of class for an hour and half so we could listen to how our school experience was incomplete without something to remember it by. So how can you remember your high school experience? Buy a cheap metal ring with fake stones in it! You can personalize it! With your initials! Look, watch this video about how we make our rings and how only our rings will be cool to wear!

So when I looked over and saw people leaning across this shitty piece of velvet covered plywood - and I had other places to be - I said "hell no," and skipped #3. I got through all the pictures pretty quickly. I do theater a lot and I've done tons of archive shoots where you're posed and asked to do things - like a model. And also, most of the time, the school photographers are asking kids to stop doing gang signs and gangsta' poses in their tux.

So I'm getting my tux pictures taken in various poses. The women, who was actually very nice, had me doing the "over the shoulder" shot where I turn my body away from the camera, but turn my head back and smile that little smirk. She's taken a couple pictures of me in that pose when she says "Turn your head back farther, like your saying 'Hi' to the girls," - I literally burst out laughing. It was bad. I made a bit of a scene, laughing at the complete irony of it all.

If you're into Macs then you know that Steve Jobs gave his keynote speech at the World Wide Developers Conference today. There were no surprises on the hardware side, with Mac Pros and new Xserves being announced, but software wise, there was one little gem that caught my ear. Apple's universal Access, built right in to OS X, is designed for the people who have trouble using computers. Universal Access includes Voiceover, which is a utility that can read text aloud. In the new version of OS X, called Leopard, Voiceover has gotten a makeover. The new voice is named Alex. Alex's voice is crazy hot. I'm not joking. Give it a listen here.

I have discovered something truly amazing. It's called Cricket Cola. It's made from kola nut, sugar cane, and green tea. It is phenomenal. I think I'm in love. I'm not really into soda that much either, but I love this! Has anyone every tried it?

Anyways, tonight I got a nice little confirmation that most people know that I'm gay after meeting me. I know this musician guy. He's probably 30 years old and he has a younger sister. I just met his sister tonight. She was really cute and was wearing a pair of those old school skates with the huge wheels. So she and I are talking and at some point she skates off. About 2 minutes later I see this really hot guy skate by on her skates. Another couple minutes later I see her again and I ask her "So who was that guy on your skates?" and she says "Oh I can't remember his name, but he has a boyfriend."

Ha. Just a little thing, but it's so nice that I don't have to go around telling everyone.

After countless hours of pondering, I have decided that I really do like Superman Returns. Privately, I know that some of you were disappointed that I didn't give it a rave review - and believe me I wanted to. In my earlier post, I pointed out some problems in the film. I still feel like those are issues, but I did concentrate on them too much. Since I saw it on IMAX the night before it opened, I have seen it in a normal theater. It is a great movie. There is so much nuance and subtlety that you miss seeing it in IMAX. I downloaded the soundtrack and I highly recommend it, especially "How Could You Leave Us" one of the most beautiful film score pieces I have ever heard. I play it so freaking loud on my stereo so that the walls shake and I think of that amazing scene between Lois and Superman over Metropolis. Ah. Maybe I should see it again.

V for Vendetta on DVD

One of my favorite movies of the year, V for Vendetta, is on DVD. Vendetta was one of those few movies that I see in theaters more than once - just because I loved it so much. I've never seen an action movie with such heart and pure idea. Even though I already liked her, Vendetta was the icing on the cake of my love for Natalie Portman - how many actresses would take a role like that? Well, if you're gonna get the DVD, get the Widescreen Two-Disc Special Edition like I am. Oh, by the way, a certain SNL rap video is included. Score.

After all the hype, personal obsession, and enthusiasm - not to mention promotion - I don't think I'll be able to see Another Gay Movie any time soon. The movie opens this Friday in New York, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. The next month or so after that, it'll open in just 14 more cities. None of which I live in or relatively close to. Damn. Someone who sees it will have to tell me how amazing it was. Even if I downloaded movies off Limewire or whatever, I doubt that a film that small would make it on there. Damn.

Damn, can anyone believe this heat? I feel like such a bum sitting inside, watching TV, drinking my iced chai, reading WIRED, and sticking my head in the freezer, but I don't care. It is hot outside and I will bum around until it cools off. Thanks global warming! I can't wait until fall. It is quite seriously my favorite time of the year and I love the weather, cool and crisp, the perfect time to snuggle up with a special guy if I had one...Oh poor me. I'll have to settle for my merino sweater. Anyways, it's not fall yet!

The other day I did something that I have never done: I dyed my hair. When I was younger, I had super blonde hair, like lightning! But as I grew up I lost it to a nice brown that I don't usually mind.

Lately, I've been getting sick of it and wanted a summer change. So I went to the drugstore and bought some L'Oreal hair dye. On the package it said that it would take 25 minutes to work. Well I left that nasty goop on for 25 minutes and nothing happened. Honestly. So I waited for it to work. I waited for not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, but 5 hours. I washed it out. My hair was reddish brown - at best. My mom said my hair was like iron - claiming to make a comment on the strength of my hair and it's ability to resist chemicals. I know she was talking about the color!

The next day I tried actual bleaching product and it worked. Well almost. It's not as blonde as my hair used to be, it's more golden now. I'm glad I did it, but I was a little disappointed, I wanted to completely revert back to my happy childhood. The thing is, in the end it doesn't matter, my hair grows freakishly fast and it'll be half gone by the time school starts. This better be a good tip off for anyone who doesn't know I'm gay, because how many straight guys dye their whole head of hair blonde?

Oh SNL, long ago are the days of Will Ferrell and Jimmy Fallon and the time when 11:30PM on Saturday meant something. Why can't SNL be the same as it was before? This past season was especially sucky (except for the Natalie Portman episode) so it comes as no surprise that both Tina Fey and Rachel Dratch are leaving the show. I think both of them are some of the strongest members of the cast and it sucks that they're leaving.

I just watched the Kathy Griffin interview on Larry King. Kathy talked a lot about her recent divorce which sucks because her husband Matt was stealing money from her. $72,000 over a year and a half to be precise. Besides that stuff, they covered a lot of her life including her family life, her early career with guest spots on Seinfeld, ER, and Ellen, her status as a D-list celebrity, her parent's new celebrity status, her material, her standup, her Afghanistan and Iraq trips, relationships with various celebrities including Barbara Walters, Star Jones, Rosie O'Donnell, and Clay Aiken, her reality show, and plastic surgery. Any one who reads this blog knows that I'm a hardcore Kathy Griffin fan, and this interview confirms my true gay obsession. If it repeats, check it out for sure.

My cell ran out of battery a couple days ago and I forgot to recharge it. Today at 4pm I was finally checking my messages and I got one from a friend about seeing Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. She said that she and some of our friends were planning to see it at 8pm, which worked out. Of course, the last message I got was her telling me that they're going to the 5pm and that they have a ticket for me. Well, I raced over there to get good seats and it was fun. I had mixed feelings about the movie, mostly because of the way it ended. Won't ruin anything here. Maybe later.

I've designated this weekend as "Cleaning Weekend" and I'm gonna try to clean my whole room. I like having a clean room, but every time I start picking clothes off the floor, I get this urge to go through every single piece of clothing I own and decide if I still like it. I'm ruthless. Oh, ok, speaking of clothes: Project Runway is coming back. When I heard this from someone I thought they were making it up or were getting confused with reruns. Nope, the big PR is coming back for a third season. I don't know what the final show will be because it's been New York Fashion Week in the past, which is awesome. I can't wait to hear more crazy gay men bitch that the overlock machine has to be fixed.

I saw Superman Returns last night, Tuesday, at an IMAX theater. I still really haven't digested the film. I did like it. It was very well made, lived up to all the hype, and I'm sure that come this Monday, it'll break some box office records - but there were some holes.

Kevin Spacey's Lex Luthor really annoyed me. It was so unclear what he wanted and how Superman figured into his plan. Spacey is a great actor, and even though I know many will disagree with me, I think it was a casting mistake. Of course, some of that is just the writing.

At the end of the film, I didn't know what I should think. Should I be getting a message of some sort? One of the trailers played up the whole Superman outsider thing, which is a part of the film, but it's never resolved or confronted, just mentioned.

Also, for a title character, Superman/Clark Kent gets very little screen time. I mean, he flies around a lot (absolutely amazing special effects by the way) but he has very little dialogue as the movie progresses. Brandon Routh was amazing. He had a very difficult challenge of filling Christopher Reeve's shoes; he did and more so. Like others have said, and I will reiterate it here, Routh makes the character his own. You will believe that a man can fly because of his performance as Superman.

Also, I would suggest seeing the film at a normal theater first, then at an IMAX. At least in my case, the print they used was really bad and didn't fit the screen that well at all. I thought we would have good seats sitting halfway up the theater, but after 2.5 hours of Superman, my neck was killing me. Sometimes it was impossible to follow the action - except in the case of the mindblowing airplane scene, which is worth the price of admission.

I still don't know how to sum up this film, as either good or bad. Bryan Singer made a film that I can't truly love the way I want to. I will ponder this......

A lot happened this past weekend.

On Friday, a friend and I went to go see Mission Impossible 3. I had mixed feelings about it at best. I thought it was a great action movie; I love JJ Abrams, who created one of my favorite shows, ALIAS. It would have been a great movie if I didn't have such a problem with Tom Cruise. The friend I went with is really cool. This past year I got to know him more and even though he is completely crazy, he's pretty cool. I don't know if he's straight or not. It's impossible to tell.

On Saturday, I had some friends over and we cooked dinner and made some really good dessert. Then we watched Grease. Gosh, what is there to say about Grease? Well, all I can say is that it's a shame that John Travolta is almost 30 years older and a Scientologist, because he was HOT!

On Sunday, a friend invited me to his friend's house, along with some over people to watch a movie. All these people are like 5 years older than me. When you're 18, 5 years older is a lot. So at some point in the movie (Superman #1), everyone except me and one person stepped out of the room and smoked outside. Uh. I'm not that into smoking. I did for a while and liked it, but now I'm not. Later, I was catching a ride home with a girl from the friend's house (didn't have the car with me). We were talking and it turned out she thought I was much older than 18. She laughed and said "You're 18? You're a baby!" aka twink (read the comments). Ha.

Kathy Griffin: More Than Just A "Gays" Magnet

The more I see Kathy Griffin, the more I truly come to love her. I've always thought she was funny on TV. When I saw her live, I was blown away. And the more I watch her reality show on Bravo, the more I really respect her.

On tonight's episode, she went to Iraq on a USO tour. I watch, listen, and read a lot about the conditions in Iraq, particularly about the lives of our troops there. Nothing brought home how dangerous, isolated, and depressing Iraq can be like tonight's episode. Kathy visited an on-base hospital and was talking to the troops about their injuries. It was amazing to watch this soldier tell Kathy about how his girlfriend and friend were killed right next to him, just the day before she got there. She tried cheering them all up, and she did, but after what they've gone through, what they've witnessed, good laughs only go so far. Kathy did routines for some troops, and it isn't her typical material (most of which I know by heart).

Kathy makes a big point of saying that she doesn't support the war, but that she supports the troops. I couldn't agree more. I hope she makes it to the A-list someday.

By the way, I WILL be talking more about politics this summer, and believe me, I have a hell of a lot to say.

Another Gay Movie - "The gay teenage sex comedy you've been waiting for..."

Nothing - besides Superman Returns - has me more jazzed about summer than Another Gay Movie. As you might guess from the title, the movie is "a perfect tribute/send-up to the teen sex comedies of the 1980s, 90s and 2000s - for the first time with a completely gay twist."

There is no official trailer until the end of the week, but the the movie's site has a great clip.

Right now, I have the feeling that I'm going through one of those subtle shifts in life. Nothing super major is happening and I'm generally happy, but things are changing. Then again, I'm still technically a teenager, shouldn't I be worried if things weren't changing?

A good friend of mine just recently moved away. I've known him since middle school, but I didn't really get to know him or hang out with him until this year. As far as I know, he's straight, and he's the coolest straight guy in the world. I'm sure he knows that I'm gay and he's cool with that, again, as far as I know. I just admire him so much as a person and to see him go just kills me. It feels like such a waste that I didn't get to know him until this past year, my junior year.

Gosh, senior year is going to be crazy. I promised myself that I wouldn't turn into that mad, driven, insane, high school student, and even though school isn't that great, my classes next year are going to be highly demanding. With senior year comes college stuff, oh fun. Looking at and visiting various colleges isn't as much fun as I thought it would be. I've visited some really great schools, like top in the nation kind of schools, and it's utterly daunting to think about going somewhere for 4 whole years. When I first started searching, I didn't know what I wanted at all, but now, I have a rough, okay, very vague idea: I want to go to a liberal arts college with a nice campus, not too far away from home, not too preppy, plenty artsy, AND super GLBT friendly. I decided one day that I should be snobby and only look at schools that have a reputation for being overtly GLBT friendly. I need that sort of atmosphere I think, or I'm gonna go bonkers, and I NEVER say "go bonkers".
